Altern 8

Altern 8 is a British electronic music duo formed in 1990 in Stafford, England, by Mark Archer and Chris Peat. Initially a side project of Nexus 21, they became prominent figures in the early 1990s UK rave scene, known for their distinctive sound blending breakbeat hardcore, acid house, and Detroit techno influences. Their music featured heavy basslines, samples, and a high-energy rave style. The duo gained recognition for their unique image, performing in chemical warfare suits and masks, which complemented their theatrical live shows.

Their breakthrough came with releases like the Overload EP and singles such as "Frequency" and "The Vertigo EP." Their 1992 album, Full On... Mask Hysteria, became a defining record of the UK hardcore/rave genre. Although they initially split in 1994, the duo reunited years later, releasing new material including the 2020 single "Hard Crew," their first in 27 years. Mark Archer continues to work as a DJ and producer, maintaining the legacy of Altern 8 and Nexus 21.
